Downtown Conway, SC - Rumors, Ramblings, and Generally Untrustworthy Information.

Local Writer Gets Conway, SC Featured in Statewide Magazine

She loves writing and loves Conway, SC.  That's good enough for me, and good enough for South Carolina Living Magazine.  Local freelance writer and blogger S. Kim Henson deserves a big thank-you from all of us in Conway.   Her article, 10 Reasons to Love Conway, has been published in one of the most read magazines in South Carolina.  According to Horry Electrical Cooperative, the magazine should be in your mailbox this week.  If you just cannot wait, checkout the online version here: 10 Reasons to Love Conway.  I'm betting more than a few folks will plan a day trip to Conway, SC after reading her work.

Temporary Space Found

It looks like we are the latest victim of optimistic remodeling deadlines.  The opening of our new Main Street location has been delayed on two fronts.  The first is just the remodeling process.  The other is a building ownership issue.  Both of which we have no control over.  Once the second issue is cleared, the first can proceed.  In typical rumor fashion, I will speculate that the issues will be resolved in 2 to 3 months.  Either way, the CJ will find a permanent home downtown.  The good news is that this week we began work in a temporary location on Laurel Ave.  We are right across from the city's planning department.  It is a place to work and it is downtown. Win.

Coming or Going?

The CCU student run STUDIO9TEN appears to have changed plans.  After our last "Rumors" column, the Horry Indy reported that there was some disagreement within the board of.....errr... decision maker people.  Sorry, I get the all the different boards mixed-up.  Last I heard, they were going to explore the possibility of finding a location with free or reduced rent.  I'm not sure if they had any luck with that, but the signs are gone from the 3rd Ave location and the place is pretty empty.  The Indy tweeted a link to a story update, but when I clicked it, there was no story to be read.  Status: unknown.

Weiner City has closed.  Bummer huh?  I liked having those guys downtown.

*As a hot dog option Fats At the Warehouse, the bar on Laurel St. near the Riverwalk, has a sign up that says "2 Hot Dogs w/Fries $3.00".  If you're fan of vodka with your hot dog, you've got bonafide $4.50 value meal.

Coming In

We are in.

Conway Glass has begun the process getting the new building ready to move in.

Chloe's Cafe still has the "coming soon" sign up.  No new details other than this blurb in the Sun News.

The Italian restaurant going into the Black Water Market continues to push back the opening date.  Word is, they are still planning to open.

CDA to Request Beer for Crawlers

CDA will go to city counsel and request permission for merchants with correct licensing to be able to sell beer and wine "to-go" on first of the month Thursday Crawls.  The hope is that the addition of cold beer will make the event more attractive to potential visitors.  Can't knock'em for trying.

If they are looking to make the Crawl more attractive, they should move it to Saturday afternoon/evening.  Every single business owner that I have spoken with would prefer a Saturday event.  We need to build consistently strong weekends downtown, from there we'd have a foundation to build on.  Oh, never mind, nothing new can be said here.

Quote of the Week

"The stock market may be gyrating like a stripper in a dimly lit bar, but the city of Conway isn’t worried its money will be whisked away as attention is riveted on the moves." This classy analogy was the first line in the latest edition of the Conway Notebook. After their regular reporting of our city's crime and disaster porn, this always glowing column appears to be the Sun News weekly attempt at redemption with local readers and advertisers.  Read the whole story at www.thesunnews.com
